Northern Ireland man is accused of killing mum and her baby

A 53-year-old man — believed to be originally from Northern Ireland — was remanded in custody yesterday when he appeared in court accused of murdering a mother-to-be.

Alan McMullan appeared at Grimsby Magistrate’s Court for a two minute hearing.

Claire Wilson (21), from Grimsby, north-east Lincolnshire, died along with her unborn child after she was stabbed in the back in Pasture Street in the town on Sunday.

McMullan, whose address was given as Sherwood Road, Grimsby, was remanded in custody to appear at Hull Crown Court on June 16. There was no application for bail.

McMullan appeared in the dock wearing an open-neck white shirt and glasses.

He was surrounded by three security officers as he stood to confirm his name, his address and give his date of birth.

There were no members of Miss Wilson’s family in court.

Tributes have poured in for Miss Wilson since she died in hospital on Sunday.

The large collection of flowers and other mementoes at the spot where she was stabbed continued to grow yesterday, as people who knew her and complete strangers left messages.

Friends have said Miss Wilson was seven months pregnant and brimming with excitement about having her first child. She and her partner, Adam Kennard (23), planned to call her April.\On Sunday Mr Kennard was distraught as he spent half an hour at the scene of the attack.

He was comforted by a large group of friends and family as he read the many tributes to his girlfriend, and placed a "Baby Girl" balloon among them.

Among the other tributes was a card accompanied by a pair of red baby shoes which said "Baby April. You would have been the most loved baby in the world. Take care of your mum for us."
