100 temporary jobs for DVA staff in Coleraine

By Michael McHugh

Up to 100 jobs are set to be offered to former motor tax workers in Coleraine – a decision that could secure work until the end of the year, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said.

About 300 positions will be shed, mostly in the Co Londonderry town, when Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) services are moved to Swansea in Wales on July 21.

Mr McCausland said: "I have arranged for officials to meet with their counterparts as soon as this Friday with a view to exploring potential areas of work that could support up to 100 posts on a short term basis through to December this year, which would be located in Coleraine.

"I would hope to be in a position to provide the details of these opportunities within the next few weeks."

The Department of the Environment has said it will move 70 Civil Service posts to Coleraine to lessen the impact of job losses.
