1,000 racist incidents since 2014 racial equality strategy

By Staff Reporter

There have been around 1,000 racist incidents since Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness published their long-awaited proposals on racial equality last June, Alliance has claimed.

The First and Deputy First Minister published their proposals for combating racism last June.

They were stalled since 2007.

The strategy has been out for consultation ever since, "but one year on there has been very little action", said Chris Lyttle.

"It begs the question how much of a priority is racial equality for the First and Deputy First Ministers," the East Belfast MLA said at a balloon launch to mark one year since the publication.

South Belfast Alliance MLA Anna Lo added: "There has been a sharp rise in the number of racist incidents that were reported with 1,356 taking place in 2014/15, up from 982 in 2013/14.

"There is an urgent need for OFMDFM to finally show some leadership on this issue and implement this strategy to help combat these crimes."
