£1,050 bill for Ulster councillors who wouldn't share car
Two councillors who refused to share a car from Strabane to the same event in Waterford are costing local ratepayers hundreds of pounds.
Strabane district council are set to fork out £1,050 to send Independent councillor Eugene McMenamin and Dan Kelly, of Sinn Fein, to the same seminar from April 13 to14, and of the total, £611 will be claimed back as travel expenses.
Despite members agreeing at a recent council meeting that "the common sense logic" would be to send the pair together, the notion appears to have been disregarded with the council minutes noting "it would be unfair to compel elected representatives to share transport".
SDLP Councillor Patsy Kelly said it was difficult to justify sending the councillors 200 miles to the same venue in separate cars. "Do we not have a duty to the ratepayers to make savings where possible?" the Strabane Chronicle reported him as asking.
