18 face courts over poaching in loughs
Eighteen people have been charged over poaching in Lough Foyle and Carlingford Lough.
Bailiffs have seized 161 illegal nets, 12 boats, two cars and 36 bags of oysters.
In recent years bricks, stones and knives have been used to intimidate and attack Loughs Agency patrol staff and last year a patrol boat on the River Foyle came under attack when a concrete block was dropped off a bridge.
Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill revealed that 18 people have been charged over the illegal netting of fish in the two systems. “Ten cases relating to 18 individuals have been presented to the Loughs Agency’s solicitors for ongoing processing through the courts,” she said.
“Twelve boats were seized and five of these have already been the subject of destruction orders by the courts, along with 80 nets.”
