£1.9m plan set to transform Enniskillen's riverside
A new £1.9 million scheme to transform the Castle Basin area of Enniskillen town centre has been given the go-ahead.
As part of the plan, an extensive riverside walkway, an events area and a new Castle Promenade will be built along the River Erne's shoreline.
The Department for Social Devlopment has provided most of the money for the project and will work jointly with Fermanagh District Council.
Minister Nelson McCausland said: "This scheme will significantly improve the Castle Basin area of Enniskillen and will ensure that the island town is connected and integrated as much as possible. The provision of an extensive riverside walkway and events area will significantly increase the attractiveness of Fermanagh for visitors and will accommodate more outdoor events that will help to diversify the town centre's economy and sustain activity outside traditional business hours."
The Castle Basin Public Realm scheme will be funded by contributions of up to £1,615,000 from the Northern Ireland Executive through the Department for Social Development and £300,000 from Fermanagh District Council.
Work is due to commence next month.
