By Claire Williamson

More than £19million was spent on roads in the Belfast City Council area in the past financial year.

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy commended road staff and contractors for the successful completion of the schemes.

Speaking before a meeting between the Department for Regional Development and the council, he said: "DRD is using its available resources highly effectively and continues to deliver quality public services in the Belfast City Council area and across Northern Ireland."

In particular Mr Kennedy highlighted the resurfacing schemes.

He said: "Road users in Belfast City Council have quickly realised the benefits of the investment by the department with the completion of a number of carriageway resurfacing schemes."
