By Alan Erwin

A man has been remanded into custody accused of snatching a handbag from a pensioner who suffered a fractured shoulder.

Thomas Coleman (22), was allegedly detained by passers-by after targeting the 84-year-old woman in Belfast city centre.

Coleman, of no fixed address, faces charges of robbery and common assault on a man at the scene on Saturday afternoon.

The elderly victim had her bag stolen in the Upper Queen Street area before witnesses chased and caught the suspected thief. She was later taken to hospital to be treated for a fractured shoulder.

Coleman was remanded in custody to appear again in four weeks time at Belfast Magistrate's Court.
