50 Britvic jobs under threat

Up to 50 jobs could go at Britvic NI, it has emerged.

And with a large factory located on the Castlereagh Road, the move has been described as a “bad blow” by East Belfast MLA Robin Newton.

The soft drinks business currently employs 139 workers in Belfast, with a further 17 employed at a site in Omagh.

If the move goes ahead it is understood at least 50 jobs will go across the two plants. A consultation period with staff has now begun.

The news came last weekend as Cantrell & Cochrane (C&C) decided not to renew the distribution and logistics contract it has with Britvic Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for the company said the contract with C&C is “set to end next month”.

Adding: “Termination of the contract will impact the scale of Britvic Northern Ireland’s operations and is likely to result in job losses across our logistics function.

“Northern Ireland remains an important market for Britvic.”

Mr Newton said: “This is another bad blow for east Belfast, following on from the very recent Hughes Christensen announcement.

“Behind this notice of up to 50 job losses are the human stories of husbands, wives, partners and children and potential future hardships.”
