£600 fine for trader who sold 'clocked' car
A Belfast car trader who sold a five-year-old vehicle which had tampered mileage has been fined £600 in court.
The Volkswagen Passat was sold by Patrick John Burrows (52) with a mileage reading of some 68,000 instead of the correct figure of at least 103,922 miles.
In a case brought to Belfast Magistrates Court by the Trading Standards Service of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Burrows pleaded guilty to three charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. A compensation order of £955 was awarded to the buyer.
A statement from the Department of Enterprise said the matter was investigated after a complaint that the defendant had sold the car with the lower mileage to a consumer.
"Additionally a service book with various service dates supplied with the car did not relate to the vehicle," it said.
