An elderly man has died after he was assaulted on his way home from a pigeon club.

Jim "Sunshine" Heasley, 70, from Craig Gardens in Lisburn, was attacked in the city on October 17.

Detective Chief Inspector Justyn Galloway said on Friday: "Following Jim's death in hospital today, this investigation has now become a murder inquiry.

"This was an unprovoked attack on a defenceless 70-year-old man who was on his way home after a night out with his friends."

A well-known and respected member of the community, he left a pigeon club in Longstone Street and was attacked in Manor Park.

A man aged 47 was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and has appeared in court.

The victim was being treated in Belfast City Hospital.
