A1 carriageway re-opened after fire

By Ricky Thompson

Motorists were left reeling this afternoon when a large section of the A1 carriageway in County Down was closed due to a fire.

The major route was blocked off when a truck caught fire because of overheated gas cylinders, according to PSNI at the scene.

Traffic was backed up in both directions, with vehicles being diverted along the narrow Dromore Road.

At least two fire appliances attended the scene, along with other emergency personnel and the road was reopened around 15.30 after the fire was extinguished and the road deemed safe.

It is not yet known if there were any injuries.
