Abandoned fishing rods in Portrush spark alert

By Claire Graham

Two abandoned fishing rods at a north coast seaside resort have sparked a major search operation amid fears that the owner may have fallen into the water.

A large-scale operation was launched by the RNLI Lifeboat, alongside the Portrush Coastguard and the Irish Coastguard helicopter, based in Sligo.

By last night, no-one had been found and the fishing rods still hadn't been claimed by anyone.

The rods were discovered close to rocks at the Blue Pool in Portrush by a member of the public who then raised the alarm.

Belfast Coastguard's Ian Murdock appealed for anyone who may have been fishing on the Co Antrim shorelines late on Friday or Saturday to come forward as soon as possible.

"Until we find out that the owner of the rods is safe we have to assume the worst," he said.

"If you were fishing at the Blue Pool please call the coastguard, particularly if you left some equipment behind," added Mr Murdoc k.
