Abbey pupils fundraiser in memory of teacher Claire Millar

By Staff Reporter

More than 600 primary school children have helped raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK in memory of a much-loved teacher.

Mother-of-two Claire Millar (48) - who was a teacher at Abbey Primary School in Newtownards for 28 years and a member and coach at Ards Ladies Hockey Club - was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in May 2016 after she found a lump.

Claire later thought she had beaten the disease but the cancer returned and she passed away last October.

At the time, husband Colin, who is the principal of Killard House School in Donaghadee, described Newtownards woman Claire as "beautiful both inside and outside".

"Claire brought love, joy, hope and happiness to everyone who met her," he said last year.

"She loved life and she lived her life to the max and never sat down."

Yesterday, hundreds of children from Abbey Primary took part in a Cancer Research UK Race for Life fundraising run. All of the pupils were sponsored and they hope to raise over £5,000 for the charity.

Yesterday, Colin presented some of the medals to the winners.
