Accused agrees to steer clear of Windsor Baptist Church

By Alan Erwin

A man has been acquitted of harassment charges after agreeing to keep away from a church.

Dennis Craig accepted a restraining order which prohibits him from loitering within 200 metres of Windsor Baptist Church in the south of the city. He is also prohibited from attempting to make contact with two members of the congregation.

The outcome was reached as he appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court on charges of harassing Dr Richard Bunn and Nigel Young. Craig (55) of Swift Place in Belfast, had been set to contest allegations that he committed the offences between November last year and January.

A judge was told he had instead agreed to the terms of the restraining order for the next two years. On that basis the prosecution offered no evidence and the case against him was dismissed.

Although no details of the case were disclosed, defence counsel Sean O'Hare said it had been a traumatic time for his client.

The barrister told the court: "He bears no ill-will or malice towards the complainants. He's willing to forgive them once they repent."
