Accused denies bookies hold-up in Turf Lodge
A man has gone on trial at Belfast Crown Court charged with carrying out an armed robbery at a bookmakers in Turf Lodge.
John Joseph Darragh (34), from Mountforde Gardens in the city, denies two charges of carrying a firearm with intent to commit an offence, and of robbing £2,000 from Ladbrokes.
Crown prosecutor David McAughey opened the case against Darragh yesterday, telling the jury and Belfast Recorder Judge David McFarland that the bookies at Norglen Gardens was targeted on the afternoon of May 30, 2009.
He said the case was based on the identification of the masked raider, who covered his face with a scarf. The prosecutor said that after hearing the evidence and examining CCTV and photographs, they would conclude Darragh was "the perpetrator".
