Accused is jailed for harassing woman

By Eamonn MacDermott

A man has been jailed for harassing a woman after he parked outside her house and stood looking at her window.

Colm McDermott (49) was convicted of harassing his victim between January 1, 2010 and September 1, 2011.

The Magistrates Court in Londonderry was told that on another occasion McDermott, of Grouse Hill Park in the city, had threatened to kill her.

The woman also reported she had been receiving abusive texts from the defendant.

The court heard that in July 2010 he walked up to the woman in a supermarket and pointed his finger in her face and laughed.

When interviewed he made no admissions. A defence solicitor said her client had no history of violence and had no desire to hurt the injured party.

Deputy District Judge Peter King said that “worryingly” McDermott had not accepted any responsibility for his actions.

He sentenced the defendant to four months in prison.
