Accused man denies any knowledge of bomb parts in Derry

By Leona O'Neill

A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court accused of having bomb parts.

Gary Burke (36) appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Dozens of families were evacuated from their homes in Ederowen Park last Wednesday night as police investigated suspicious items discovered during the search of a property.

Burke, of no fixed abode, appeared before the court charged with possession of explosives under suspicious circumstances, namely a timer power unit, the components for a quantity of power timer units and a quantity of small arms propellant.

A detective inspector said he could connect Burke to the charges and said the items were found in two bags discovered during a search on December 13.

Defence solicitor Darwen Harvey said his client had no knowledge of the items, which he said were hidden at the back of a "cubby hole" that he had no access to.

His client also said the back door was never locked.

The judge remanded Burke in custody to appear via video-link on January 11.
