Air cargo worker jailed for theft of mobile phones
An air freight cargo handler has been jailed for six months after he admitted stealing mobile phones worth almost £7,000.
Rodney Shirley (28) was a driver unloading freight from flights at the George Best Belfast City Airport at the time of the theft, Belfast Crown Court heard yesterday.
Prosecution lawyer John O'Neill told the court that on January 8 this year a worker at Birmingham Airport alerted staff at Belfast that a crate was missing from a consignment.
Police were alerted and when they checked CCTV footage, they saw Shirley unload only seven crates when there should have been eight.
Arrested and interviewed, Shirley, from the Oldpark Road in north Belfast, admitted stealing the crate of second hand mobile phones worth £6,948 but refused to tell police what he had done with them.
Defence lawyer Jonathan Browne claimed Shirley had been put "under pressure" by certain individuals to steal the phones.
