Air pistol and dagger found in Belfast man's luggage

By Paul Higgins

A Belfast man who smuggled a 'push dagger' and air pistol into Northern Ireland from Spain has been fined £250.

Joiner Brian Smyth (33) Smyth, from Wheatfield Crescent, had admitted importing the T-handled knife and realistic imitation firearm on April 29.

A prosecutor told Antrim Magistrates Court that Smyth had arrived on a flight from Alicante when the items were uncovered in his luggage. Questioned by Border Force, Smyth admitted he had intended to give them to his nephew and father as gifts.

District Judge Peter King said he had concerns over the blade, which appeared to be a "stealth weapon". He ordered both items to be destroyed.
