Alliance's Patrick Brown convicted of drink-driving backs charity

By Suzanne Breen

An Alliance councillor convicted of drink-driving has joined forces with a charity which supports road crash victims.

Patrick Brown, a member of Newry, Mourne and Down Council, was caught riding his motorbike last year while under the influence of alcohol.

He took part in an abseil down Belfast's Europa Hotel last weekend to raise money for the charity Brake which campaigns for road safety awareness.

Mr Brown said his "incredibly stupid decision" had a huge impact on his life, career and standing within the community.

"But more importantly, any instance of drink-driving has a negative impact on society as a whole as it puts others at risk," he said.

"By raising money for Brake, I want to give back for my mistake and hopefully use my story to raise awareness and warn young people in particular who may underestimate the dangers and harm caused by drink-driving."

Lisa Kendall of Brake said: "We greatly appreciate the support from Patrick and are grateful for him for so publicly telling his story to help raise vital road safety awareness."
