Andrea Begley's delight at charity role

By Lesley Houston

Talent show winner Andrea Begley said she was honoured after being named the ambassador for the Royal National Institute of Blind People in Northern Ireland.

The partially-sighted winner of BBC's The Voice in 2013, who has just 10% of her sight after being diagnosed with glaucoma as a toddler, said she was looking forward to challenging misconceptions about sight loss.

"I know first-hand, the challenges and problems you can experience and there are still huge barriers and hurdles facing people with sight loss," she said.

"People who have not come into contact with someone with visual impairment are a little afraid and do not know how to approach someone or think it is inappropriate."
