Anger after Belfast man is shot twice in the legs
A paramilitary-style attack in which a man was shot in both legs has been condemned.
The incident took place in Belfast at around 1.30am on Saturday.
The 30-year-old victim was walking along Henry Place when he was attacked by two men and shot once in both legs. He was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.
Police said it was "a brutal and horrific attack" and "another example of how criminal groups seek to control communities through fear and violence".
Sinn Fein councillor JJ Magee led the condemnation. He said: "Those behind this shooting want to drag us back to the past. It will not happen."
SDLP MLA Nichola Mallon said the attack was "extremely worrying" for people in the area.
"It's not for paramilitaries to dispense justice - that's for the police and the courts," she said.
"People in north Belfast are really weary that yet again north Belfast is in the headlines for something so harrowing."
Police appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting reference 110 22/07/17.
