Anger at Holywood petrol prices

People in Holywood are getting a “raw deal” at the petrol pumps, it has been claimed.

Alliance councillor Andrew Muir says that consumers living there are being charged 4p per litre more for fuel than those in Bangor by supermarket giant Tesco.

Mr Muir checked the price of fuel being sold at Tesco Springhill, Bangor, and Tesco Knocknagoney this week after being alerted to the price difference by angry locals.

He discovered that unleaded cost 113.9p per litre at Springhill whilst it was 117.9p per litre at Knocknagoney.

In an attack on the retail heavyweight, the councillor questioned their ‘Every Little Helps’ slogan and demanded the price difference be addressed immediately.

He said: “Constituents have contacted me about the matter and after investigation I feel that this price difference is completely unjustifiable and should be rectified without delay,” he said. “All people across North Down should be able to buy fuel from Tesco at the same price rather than those living in Holywood being forced to pay more for their fuel compared to those in Bangor.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We work extremely hard to keep prices at the pumps down. Like all other petrol retailers in the country we operate a local pricing policy and aim to be competitive on the price of fuel in the local area.”
