Anger over green postboxes

A “hooligan element” has been blamed after postboxes in Co Tyrone were repainted green.

DUP MLA Lord Morrow said he had been contacted by residents about vandalism in the Clogher Valley area, including repainted postboxes and road signs. He warned the “sectarian vandalism” was causing division in the area.

“Postboxes have been painted green by a hooligan element, undoubtedly supported by Sinn Fein,” Lord Morrow said.

“This type of anti-social behaviour does nothing to enhance the natural aesthetic of this rural community.

“Furthermore, it seeks to cause division within the community.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail is not aware of any current instances of letterboxes that have been painted green in this area.

“However, we have experienced the painting of occasional boxes green over the past few months.

“Repairs to letterboxes, which includes repainting, is carried out as soon as possible as part of our ongoing maintenance programme.”
