The Orange Order's annual Battle of the Somme Anniversary parade is taking place in east Belfast on Monday and organisers have said it will honour everyone from Ireland who fought in the battle.

Over 3500 Irishmen from across the country lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme with over 40,000 perishing in the war.

Check out pictures from last year's marches: Belfast - Annalong - Beragh - Cloughmills - Ballymena - Cookstown - Lisbellaw- Hillsborough Bangor - Kilrea - Ballynahinch - Coleraine - Cullybackey - Clogher Richhill - Newtownabbey - Broughshane - Banbridge Ardoyne

The Battle of the Somme began on July 1 1916.

The men of the 36th (Ulster) Division played a major role in the fighting suffering 2,069 casualties.

War correspondent Philip Gibbs said of the Division: "Their attack was one of the finest displays of human courage in the world."

More than one million men were killed or wounded in the battle making it one of the bloodiest in human history.

The parade always moves to a Monday when July 1 falls on a Sunday.

Organisers have said it is the longest running Battle of the Somme Anniversary Parade in the world and large numbers are expected to attend.

They said that many of those watching, like those on parade will have had relatives who served in the Battle and some who died.

"The parade is intended to honour all who fought from Ireland and around the then Empire, however, the 36th Ulster Division will have a special place in the thoughts of all," the organisers said.

34 Bands and over 40 Orange Lodges are expected to take part in the parade and it will begin at Templemore Avenue at 7.30pm and finish with an Act of Remembrance at Strandtown War Memorial around 8.30pm.

Ballymacarrett District Master, Brother Raymond Spiers said it will be a special event.

"The Battle of the Somme parade is the largest annual event in east Belfast, when thousands honour those who fought and died,” he said.

"It is always a very special night”.

"The focus of the short service and Act of Remembrance at Strandtown War Memorial will be on the Armistice in this Centenary year."
