Antrim flasher with 25 year history of offences gets nine months

An Antrim Court heard that Samuel Matthew Shannon (48) from Ballymoney had ‘an extremely extensive criminal record’ for indecent exposure and indecent assault during a case that saw the man jailed for nine months.

The court also heard of Mr Shannon’s latest offence which saw him expose his genitals and carry out an indecent act outside the home of a woman and in front of her 11-year-old son last summer.

Mr Shannon has a history of offensive incidents that stem back to 1985 including exposing himself at a number of local beaches.

He was placed on a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) which expired last November, four months after his most recent offence.

His defence solicitor argued that Mr Shannon was capable of obeying the law following a ‘significant break in reoffending’ as his last offence before 2011 was five years prior.

Judge Corinne Philpott however described his latest behaviour as a ‘disgusting offence’ sentencing him to a nine month prison sentence followed by a nine month probationary period.
