Antrim woman accused of trying to kill husband faces murder trial

By Alan Erwin

A Co Antrim woman is to stand trial accused of trying to kill her husband, a judge ruled yesterday.

Tamytha Lee Hopkins appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court to face a charge of attempted murder. The 48-year-old, of Ederny Walk in Carrickfergus, was escorted into the dock by staff from a psychiatric unit where she has been detained. She allegedly tried to murder Stephen Hopkins on November 24 last year.

No further details about the circumstances surrounding the case were revealed. The accused spoke only to confirm she did not want to give evidence or call witnesses at this stage.

Defence barrister Michael Boyd raised no objection to prosecution submissions that a prima facie case has been established against his client. District Judge Fiona Bagnall then granted an application for Hopkins to be returned for Crown Court trial.

She remanded the accused back into custody until those proceedings get under way.
