Appeal for details on malicious fatal blaze

By Patrice Dougan

Detectives investigating a fatal fire in Dungannon at the weekend have issued a direct appeal for information.

The fire claimed the lives of Betty McGirr (71) and her daughter, Deirdre (38).

Police believe the fire – which took hold of their home in the Dunlea Vale flats on Saturday night – was started deliberately.

A spokesman said detectives were “working to ascertain the exact details of what happened” at the block of flats.

They have asked to speak to anyone who talked to either Betty or Deirdre on Saturday, April 14.

Anyone who can provide information has also been asked to contact the special incident room at Dungannon station on 028 8775 0559.

Ulster Unionist MLA for the area, Tom Elliott, said the entire community had been left shocked and saddened by the deaths.

“This is a close knit community in Dunlea Vale and everybody got on well with their neighbours, and relatives and residents need to know how this tragedy occurred and need information to establish how the fire started,” he said.
