Armagh man ordered to face trial for alleged rape

By Staff Reporter

An Armagh man is to stand trial for rape linked to an alleged incident dating back almost three years.

Richard George Byrne appeared for a committal hearing at Armagh Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The 31-year-old, of Glen Macha in the city, is accused of committing the offence against a female on a date between August 28 and 31, 2015.

He spoke only to confirm his identity and that he understood the charge.

A lawyer appearing for the Public Prosecution Service said there is a case to answer.

This was agreed by District Judge Desmond Perry.

Byrne was dressed in jeans and a red T-shirt.

He declined to call witnesses or to give evidence on his own behalf during yesterday's short hearing.

Judge Perry set bail at £500.

He ordered the accused to appear for arraignment before Newry Crown Court on September 20.
