Police are investigating after videos were posted on social media of rival Traveller groups threatening each other in Co Armagh.

The footage features masked men in Bessbrook armed with knives, machetes and other weapons.

Some of them can be heard saying "We are here to cut you up" and "We'll leave you with no limbs".

The videos appeared after a pre-arranged fight between the groups failed to go ahead.

A video later emerged of a car apparently being attacked by a group of Travellers as it drove through a residential area of Bessbrook.

The Newry Reporter reported that in CCTV footage from a shop three men can be seen getting out of a car and attempting to attack another vehicle.

The men are armed with weapons similar to those in the video, but it is unclear if it is the same people involved.

Some of the footage was taken in Dobson's Way in Bessbrook.

Sinn Fein councillor Roisin Mulgrew said it affected the entire community.

"This is a completely new level of fear and intimidation and we are working to resolve the situation," she added.

"It's the start of the school holidays and parents need to know they can let their children out and they are safe."

Cllr Mulgrew confirmed a meeting would be held in the coming days to tackle the "very volatile" situation.

She explained the videos were linked to antisocial behaviour in the village, which she said also had a "problem with dogs".

The PSNI said it was aware of the footage and its investigation was ongoing.
