Armoy couple Stuart and Mary Nicholl clock up 60 happy years together

By David Young

This devoted Co Antrim couple are celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss.

Stuart and Mary Nicholl from Armoy were married in Ballycastle's Ramoan Church back in 1957.

Today they celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary after a lifetime of happiness together.

And the joy of celebrating the anniversary with their family was topped off by a special message of congratulations from the Queen.

Both Stuart (83) and Mary (84) come from the north Antrim area.

Stuart worked in the construction industry, first as a joiner, and later as a clerk of works.

Mary worked as a home-maker, and later as a school cook.

Daughter Rosemary Nicholl told the Belfast Telegraph: "Daddy always said: 'You have to work hard at it, and do your best to agree - and I've always tried to put mammy first.'"

That would be the couple's top tip for 2017 newlyweds, too, she added.

Rosemary said the special letter and photograph from the Queen came as a complete surprise to the couple.

"They were absolutely delighted," she added.

The Queen's message read: "I'm so pleased to know you are celebrating your Diamond wedding anniversary on the 27th of February.

"I send my congratulations and best wishes to you on such a special occasion."

It was signed Elizabeth R.

And the couple are already looking forward to their 70th anniversary - and another royal letter.
