Arrest after man stabbed to death

Community leaders in Londonderry have spoken of their shock after a stabbing claimed the life of a 56-year-old man.

Christopher McGaughey died after he was attacked in the Hollymount Park area of Gobnascale at around 1am on Sunday.

Police investigating the killing have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

Detectives said a woman sustained minor injuries during the incident.

SDLP councillor Gerard Diver said the Gobnascale community is in shock over the killing.

"I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and close friends of the victim, they have to deal with a situation that every family dreads," he said.

"People are shocked and saddened at this awful news.

"I urge anybody with information to bring it to the police."

Local priest Fr Michael Canny said the victim was well known in the area and said people were devastated by the incident.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
