Arson bid accused put under curfew and tagged

A man has appeared in court accused of trying to set fire to a building in south Belfast.

Michael McGeown (56) faces three charges following an incident at premises on the Ormeau Road on Wednesday.

Police were called to the scene following reports of a man on the roof of the building.

McGeown, of McAuley Street in Belfast, entered the dock at the city's Magistrates Court accused of attempted arson with intent to endanger life.

He is further charged with criminal damage.

And he is accused of possessing a bag of papers and lighters with intent to damage property.

The defendant was granted bail to live under curfew and electronic monitoring at an address in the city, the Courts Service confirmed.

McGeown must also abide by an exclusion zone and report to police three times a week.
