A blaze at an Army base next to the Northern Ireland headquarters of MI5 threatened to destroy historical artefacts belonging to the Royal Irish Regiment.

The fire at Palace Barracks in Holywood, Co Down, broke out in the Royal Irish regimental headquarters yesterday morning.

Regimental secretary Major Colin Gray described it as "a disaster".

He told Forces Network news some valuables from the building have been recovered, including two statuettes and a cigar box.

"We are very lucky that the fire started at one end of the building - the end of the building that had less of our valuable artefacts and history in it," he said.

The PSNI is not treating the fire as suspicious and no casualties were reported.
