Loyalist protesters prepare to set off during the march from Belfast City Hall

A flag protest in Bangor has been rescheduled to take place in the new year instead of during a peak Christmas shopping day.

The parade, organised by the North Down branch of the Ulster People's Forum, had been planned for Saturday, December 21.

But following negotiations over the weekend, it will now take place in January.

Flag protester Jamie Bryson said the decision came after talks between traders, town centre management and parade organisers.

"On the basis of agreement by the traders to welcome a new year protest parade, which they felt would be beneficial for their trade, we have agreed to postpone the parade until the new year," he said.

"This has been done only because of the positive and supportive attitude of the traders and town centre management who we never sought to harm.

"As a result of positive leadership from both the organisers and the traders an amicable agreement has been reached that not only will benefit the town but also for the first time since December 3, 2012, a traders' organisation has actually publicly welcomed a protest parade."
