The Ministry of Defence (MoD) may hold vital information about the murder of a Catholic salesman in Northern Ireland over 40 years ago.

Daniel Joseph Carson, from Brooke Drive in Dunmurry, was gunned down as he left work at a hardware merchants in the Shankill area of Belfast in November 1973.

The 29-year-old, whose wife was expecting their second child, was shot in the head and died almost instantly.

No one has ever been convicted in connection with the killing, which was attributed to an unidentified loyalist group.

At a preliminary hearing in Belfast this morning it was revealed soldiers were on the scene shortly after the shooting. A lawyer representing the Carson family said they hoped to obtain MoD files on the case. He said: "The Army attended the scene and spoke to a suspect. There is a query as to whether or not there is documentation from the MoD which would be relevant."

Coroner Suzanne Anderson said her office would write to the MoD regarding the case.
