Assault accused 'breached bail terms'

By Eamonn MacDermott

A court heard how a man accused of assaulting a female brought her with him when he handed himself in to police.

Limavady Magistrates Court heard that David Canning (27), of King's Lane, Ballykelly, faced a charge of assaulting the female on September 24.

He had been released on bail on condition he did not approach the alleged injured party.

The court heard that on October 8 police received a report that Canning was in the woman's house. When they arrived the accused ran off. A police officer said this was a clear breach of bail.

The court was then told that when Canning came to Limavady police station on October 11 he was accompanied by the same female.

Police were told that the woman wanted to make a withdrawal statement.

But the officer said that when she was taken into a private area she told police she did not want to withdraw.

Police opposed bail on grounds of interference with witnesses.

Canning was remanded in custody to appear again by video-link on November 3.
