British astronaut Tim Peake took advantage of the clear skies over the UK yesterday to tweet a photo of Northern Ireland basking in the sunlight.

While Scotland may have been Major Peake's main focus, most of Northern Ireland - where the former platoon commander and helicopter pilot once served - can be seen in his photo taken from aboard the International Space Station.

Major Peake, the first British national to become an astronaut, posted the image on Twitter yesterday with the caption: "Scotland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man looking good this morning!"

He added the hashtag #Principia - the name of his six-month mission.

On Sunday, he posted an image of smoke from the massive wildfires raging in Alberta, Canada.
