Attack on girlfriend ‘horrifying’

A judge yesterday described as horrifying and terrifying an attack by a 21-year-old man who repeatedly kicked and punched his then 16-year-old girlfriend in a house in the Waterside area of Londonderry last year.

Judge Piers Grant made the comment at the city's Crown Court in the case of Kyle O'Brien from Kular Court in William Street.

O'Brien pleaded guilty to kicking and kneeing his then girlfriend in the genital area. He further admitted detaining her against her will, punching her on the face and painfully inflicting so-called love bites on her neck.

The assaults took place last June 24, just four days after O'Brien was given a suspended sentence for another separate assault offence.

Judge Grant said O'Brien had also breached the terms of a Probation Order by continually harassing the victim after the assaults.

He adjourned sentencing until next Tuesday and told O'Brien that as well as imposing a sentence he would put in place a Protection Order “because this young woman needs protection from you”.

O'Brien was remanded in custody until he's sentenced.
