Infrastructure Minister Nicola Mallon has condemned those responsible for attacks on NI Water key workers and property causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

A NI Water staff member was attacked with a firework in Etna Drive in North Belfast while a NI Water sewage pumping station in Enniskillen was vandalised with a fire started deliberately.

Minister Mallon said it was particularly shocking given that these are people working on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.

The minister said: "Firstly my thoughts are with the NI Water staff member who was subjected to this appalling firework attack and I wish them a speedy recovery.

"A deliberate fire was also started at a sewage pumping station in Fermanagh which has caused an estimated £20 000 worth of damage.

This is an attack on the very people that are on the frontline in the battle against Covid-19. When handwashing is more important than ever, NI Water staff, contractors and facilities are critical in keeping the taps running and delivering one of the most essential services we have.

"These attacks are reckless and dangerous, wasting precious money and resources and they must stop."

NI Water has called on local representatives to support them in returning to the area and ensuring this doesn't happen again.
