Attempted murder among charges as duo face court over brutal assault

By Staff Reporter

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a serious assault in Banbridge.

The 22-year-old has also been charged with criminal damage, theft and assaults on police.

A 20-year-old man has also been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, and theft.

They are both due to appear at Banbridge Magistrates Court, sitting in Newry, today.

As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

On Friday afternoon a man aged in his 40s was seriously assaulted at a block of flats in the Scarva Walk area.

The critically injured man was treated in Craigavon hospital for head injuries.

Police described it as a "horrific attack".

The PSNI Banbridge Facebook page said that without a "fantastic and composed" ambulance crew at the scene "we could have been dealing with a death".

Police spoke to witnesses after the attack, but added: "If we didn't get speaking to you and you witnessed any of this incident, which may have started outside the fire station and ended up in the flats, please contact us on 101.

"This was a horrendous incident which has left a man lying in hospital with serious injuries. If you know anything, please speak up."
