Baby boy clings to life in Belfast hospital after accident in Co Armagh home

By Lesley Houston

A baby boy is clinging to life in a Belfast hospital after an accident at his home in Co Armagh.

Little Alex McCartney, who is understood to be seven months old, was last night said to be in a critical condition following the incident in Lurgan at the weekend.

The baby's parents, named locally as Stephen McCartney and Joanne Pedlow, are understood to have been maintaining a vigil at his bedside at the Royal Victoria Hospital ever since.

It is believed the child had been on a life support system since Sunday.

Baby Alex has two older sisters, Aimee and Lily.

The hospital has declined to comment on the matter.

In Lurgan yesterday local residents were shocked to hear of the baby's accident.

No one wanted to comment publicly, but said that they had heard the baby's life support system was due to be turned off yesterday, and that he remained in a critical condition afterwards.

Another said the child was due to undergo an MRI scan.

Other residents said they were hoping the young family would get good news very soon.

"It's just terrible," said one local person.

"I didn't know, but I've just heard my wife and neighbour had heard about it and it's just so sad to hear," said another.

DUP councillor Carla Lockhart represents the area in which the family live.

Though she declined to comment on the tragedy, her Facebook page carries heartfelt wishes to the baby's family.

Over pictures of the child she wrote: "Folks wherever you are today, stop and pray for this wee boy Alex McCartney.

"For his mum Joanne and daddy Stephen McCartney!

"This has touched the hearts of 1000s of people... Pray that God will touch him."

Stephen McCartney's page is awash with messages from friends who found out the terrible news in recent days.

Well-wishers have been offering words of comfort.

Many posted that they were praying for "a miracle". One poster stated: "Heart goes out to you, Joanne and the rest of the family circle at this time.

"No one should have to go through what you guys are going through. Thinking of you all at this terribly tragic time. x"

Another friend's said: "I can't even imagine what u, Joanne and the girls are going through ... heartbreaking news ... thinking of u all."

Another well-wisher added: "As a father myself I can't even begin to comprehend what you and your family are going through. Thinking of you, Joanne and the family."

"I wish use (sic) every strength possible to get through this hard time."

Police confirmed they are making inquiries into the incident.

"Police received a report of an incident at a house in the Mourneview area of Lurgan on the evening of Saturday, January 17. A baby boy has been taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

"Inquiries are ongoing," they added.
