Baby joy as Mark H Durkan says hello to his 'little flower'

By Harriet Crawford

Meet "little flower" Lily Violet.

Her birth was celebrated by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan and his wife Anne yesterday.

She weighed a healthy 8lb 3oz when delivered at Derry's Altnagelvin Hospital.

The minister tweeted a picture of him embracing his wife and baby just two-and-a-half hours after the birth. He said: "Introducing our little flower Lily Violet. Baby and mum both doing well. Dad buzzing."

Lily Violet is the couple's first child together. The punctual baby was expected to be born this week.

Mr Durkan, who took over as Environment Minister in 2013, received floods of congratulations from well-wishers after he shared the good news. His uncle, MP Mark Durkan, took to Twitter to congratulate the family.

The new parents had wanted to see the baby before deciding on the name, according to Shauna Cusack, SDLP councillor for Derry, who works in Mr Durkan's constituency office.

SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly said: "I texted them this morning to wish them well. I am sure that she will bring them both great joy."

Lily Violet shares a birthday with Mr Durkan's 13-year-old son, Luke.

"Mark already has a son, and it's fantastic he has a daughter now," added Ms Cusack.
