Baby's mother and partner on cruelty charges

A 22-year-old woman and her 24-year-old partner have appeared in court charged with causing cruelty to her baby daughter.

The couple, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the baby, appeared in court in Londonderry yesterday where they were jointly charged that between August 11 and August 14, 2010, they caused cruelty to the one-year-old by wilfully assaulting, ill-treating or abandoning her to expose her to unnecessary suffering or injury.

They are also jointly charged that between August 11 and October 23, 2010, they perverted the course of justice by providing false information about how the baby sustained her injuries.

Solicitors for the two defendants told District Judge Barney McElholm that they accepted their clients had a prima facie case to answer. The solicitors said the medical evidence in the case was complex and added that they would be engaging medical experts of an equal standing to the prosecution's medical experts.

The mother was released on her own bail of £500 and her partner was remanded in custody. Both will be arraigned on August 31.
