Badgers to remain at PSNI college
They will not be the first tunnels dug to evade prison guards, but at least the ones planned for the new emergency services college at Cookstown are authorised.
Contractors bidding this spring for the tender to build the £140m police, fire and prison services centre at Desertcreat will have to accommodate local residents who apparently have no intention of leaving.
All roads and paths on the 250-acre site are required to have tunnels under them at decreed points to allow the badger population to go safely about their business.
PSNI Deputy Chief Constable Judith Gillespie said the underground network was one of a series of features to protect wildlife.
Measures are also being taken to ensure disruption to newts and owls is kept to a minimum.
