Baggage handlers at Belfast International Airport set to go on strike

By Claire Williamson

Baggage handlers at Belfast International Airport are taking strike action in a bid to secure union recognition.

Swissport workers at Aldergrove are to strike following a 94% vote for industrial action in a recent ballot conducted by trade union Unite. Swissport provides front desk and back of house services for airlines and tour operators including Easyjet, Thomas Cook, Thompsons and Jet2.

The strike will start at 4am for a four-hour period on Monday, September 8. Unite said the action comes as Swissport management have displayed a "staggering contempt" for their workers.

Unite's Davy Thompson said: "By refusing to recognise their employees' right to be represented collectively by a union of their choice, Swissport management is displaying a staggering contempt for their workers."

Swissport said they will be making a comment today.

Elsewhere, Ulsterbus and Metro bus drivers are to be balloted over plans to take strike as Translink's offer of a 1% pay increase has been withdrawn because of cuts to public transport funding.
