Bailed denied for 'prank' shop raider
A District Judge has refused bail to a 19-year-old man who twice walked into a shop holding a kitchen knife and wearing a plastic bag over his head in what he said was a “mistaken prank”.
Kevin Barry Clarence, from Glenview Drive in Limavady, is alleged to have committed the offence at the SPAR shop in the town's Coolessan Walk last Sunday. He was charged with possessing a knife and aggravated burglary.
A police officer told District Judge Barney McElholm that shortly after the shop was opened, the defendant walked in with a knife in his hand and a plastic bag over his head. It is alleged he tried to open a till and then left the shop after an assistant recognised him. Some time later Clarence is alleged to have returned, but he fled when challenged and was later arrested.
He was remanded in custody until January 31.
