Ballymena fire: Major blaze at Woodgreen furniture store spreads to other businesses

A major blaze at Woodgreen furniture store in Ballymena, County Antrim has spread to adjoining businesses.

The blaze is thought to have started at about 5pm on Tuesday. Police said Broughshane Street will remain closed overnight.

A total of 58 firefighters have been tackling the fire.

Group commander Brian Stanfield said the fire had spread to five shops.

"We have eight fire appliances and two aerial platform specialist appliances currently tackling the blaze to try and stop it spreading further," he said.

"In one of the properties the roof has collapsed as well."

The fire service said in a statement: "On arrival at the incident, initial crews were confronted by a well-developed fire in the property. Crews from several surrounding stations attended.

"There are currently 8 fire appliances, 2 high reach aerial appliances and a specialist command support unit, with a total of 58 firefighters on the fire ground and extensive firefighting operations are still ongoing. "
