Police used CS spray after coming under attack from individuals in a crowd of 150 people which gathered as nightspots were closing in Ballymena in the early hours of yesterday.

Trouble flared at Springwell Street at around 2am after revellers left nearby bars. It is understood part of a crowd surrounded six police officers.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "While police were carrying out an arrest on suspicion of vehicle theft and drink driving in Springwell Street, Ballymena, at around 2am, officers came under attack from a crowd of around 150 people and CS spray was deployed.

"One woman was arrested for assault on police and resisting arrest after striking three officers, punching one in the face.

"The 24-year-old has since been charged with three counts of assault on police and is expected to appear at Coleraine Magistrates court on December 23."

The spokeswoman added that an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of 'taking and driving away' and drink driving.
